Shopify is an amazing team — you should apply :)

To the Shopify team:

Me old

Hi, I’m Thibaut.

I’m a French developer passionate about building web applications that improve people’s lives. I think you’re creating some of the most influential and innovative software on Earth.
I’d love to join your team.

What’s special about me

From social networks to productivity apps and developer tools, I have a lot of experience creating complex web applications using Ruby and JavaScript. I also care about design: my CSS snippets are a popular resource among developers and regularly featured in the media.

Having sold UI kits to hundreds of developers, I understand how challenging it is to make a sale, along with the deep satisfaction that comes with making your customers happy. This made me realize the full extent of the change ecommerce is bringing to the world.

I believe in living responsibly, following one’s passion, and persevering in the face of obstacles. In my free time, I like to play and read. There are a million things I want to try, to learn, to be better at.

What’s special about you

Your open source contributions are making the web a better place and have been a huge inspiration to me since 2007, when I started programming with Ruby. I also like how you’re continuously defying the status quo, creating trends instead of following them.

You strive for excellence. Did I mention I’m a perfectionist? I care deeply about code readability and efficiency, in addition to making elegant and intuitive software. You don’t compromise on quality. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

You work together as a team in a friendly environment that spurs creativity. I love that every one of you owns a piece of Shopify. I think it’s essential to a company’s success. In the end, I don’t want to come work for you—I want to work with you.

Things I’m proud to have built

You can see the complete list and more screenshots on my website.
My latest project is a documentation reader (screenshot above). Although I haven't yet open-sourced it, feel free to take a look at the code. It has a fully automated Ruby scraper, tests, and a CoffeeScript front-end that uses no external libraries.

Things I’d be proud to build with you

  • Batman.js
Both Ruby and Rails redefined the meaning of developer happiness and productivity. I believe in extending that vision to the client-side and would love to contribute to Batman.js.
  • A revamped theme store
A beautiful design is one of the major selling points of an online store builder. I think Shopify’s theme gallery could be improved, and features like a live theme preview (of the customer’s own store) might help sell even more themes.
  • A better editing interface
I think putting the editor right within the storefront would make it easier to see how the content fits within the overall design of the page. Likewise, the theme editor and live preview could be combined into a panel-based interface that provides instant feedback.

Finally, I should warn you that I would push for making all Shopify websites “Retina-ready”.

Thanks for reading. I hope we can get to know each other very soon.
— Thibaut

PS: I happen to have recently landed in Ottawa—my first time in Canada.
This may or may not be a coincidence. ;)
